Description

This course provides a comprehensive framework for designing and facilitating welfare-driven dog playgroups in shelter environments. Participants learn how to assess canine behavior, support emotional well-being, and integrate playgroups as a purposeful tool for both enrichment and behavior evaluation. Key Learning Objectives: Understand playgroup design, structure, and staffing roles. Apply safe handling practices, proactive management, and effective use of safety tools. Recognize and interpret canine body language, including distance-increasing, distance-decreasing, and calming signals. Implement decision-making flowcharts and structured observation methods to guide introductions, manage stress, and reduce conflict. Use playgroup data to inform pathway planning, adoption placement, and behavior-based outcomes. Develop SOPs for responding to scuffles and fights, documenting incidents, and reintegrating dogs safely. Explore legacy planning and long-term strategies for sustainable playgroup programs within shelters. Relevance to Professional Competencies: The program strengthens skills in canine communication, applied behavior analysis, welfare assessment, and shelter operations. It equips trainers and behavior consultants with tools to enhance safety, reduce stress and aggression, and improve adoption outcomes. Format: Multi-lesson course with lecture content, case examples, interactive workbooks, and scenario-based planning.
