Description

Your Certificate Program Modules Module 1: Introduction To the Human/Non-Human Animal Bond In the first module, we cover how many things impact the power of the human/non-human animal bond, not the least of which is the reason for which the pet was obtained. This powerful bond affects our lives in many ways, and because of this bond, many people struggle with the grief that results from the loss of their pet’s life. Module 2: Explore & Learn More About Quality of Life and Palliative Care This module is divided into two sections. The first covers death and also explores quality of life and palliative care. Together with two palliative care veterinarians, we discuss many of the concerns pet guardians (also known as carers in this course) have during this stage in their pet’s life. In Module 2B, we examine what happens after death, including information about crematoria, burial, and other methods of disposing of or preserving a pet’s body. Module 3: The Whys and Wherefores of Memorialising Pets This module explains why and how to memorialize a pet. Spending time creating a memorial helps focus on positive memories of the departed pet. Although it may bring tears, making such a tribute can be a helpful tool for coping with the pain and sorrow of pet loss. In the years ahead, it can also serve as a comforting reminder of the pet and the bond shared between the carer and the pet. Module 4: The Complexities of Grief Grief is love in the face of separation or change. Grief and its complexities are the focus of Module 4. The first part of this module covers different types of grief, what grief is and isn’t, common grief responses, and the various types of grievers. In the second half, we explore the seven stages of grief, and instead of seeking closure, we discuss the idea of reconciling with grief. Module 5: The Anatomy of Grief Across Family Members and How Best TO Communicate Kids and grief, the elderly and grief, and our other pets and their grief—these are topics covered in Module 5. This module also discusses how to communicate effectively with the bereaved and addresses some well-meaning remarks that might not be appropriate. Module 6: Understand Companioning as Opposed to Helping! Getting to the core, this module covers companioning (rather than helping) the bereaved. This approach may best allow us to support someone by setting professional and personal boundaries around companioning them through their grief and self-care. As professional animal trainers, we understand the importance of referring clients when issues go beyond our expertise. The same applies to pet bereavement; it is a complex process, and some cases may require more professional assistance. Module 7 – The Business of Companioning. Once certified as a Pet Bereavement Companion, what are the best ways to reach and serve your community with this valuable service? This module guides you through creating new services, naming them, and launching them into the market. Certificate holders also receive six months of BusinessSMARTS business support at a 50% discount to help them start their new careers and service offerings.
